This piece began on site in this Venetian square, Santi Giovanni e Paolo, studying the architecture of the Basilica and surrounding homes built along the canal. The atmosphere of these visits, returning to the same spot each evening after exploring the Biennale, was then rendered in oils back in the studio. Fine layers developed in intricate detail and deep hues suggest the warmth of the city just moments after the autumn rainfall.
